Olympic Closing Ceremonies

Fashion! A trip to Opening Ceremony on Howard Street today reminded me that the Olympic closing ceremonies were tonight. Just in time to see a creepy, corpse-grey, oversized head sculpture form into John Lennon's face, then subsequently dissipate into dozens of pieces again. Apparently, the Brits are just as proud of their fashion legacy as they are of their musical national treasures. Hey, I know you forgot about the existence of Kaiser Chiefs, but whoever organized the closing ceremonies certainly didn't. Anyways, back to what's relevant: Pet Shop Boys in Gareth Pugh. Despite finally getting some attention when Beyonce starting wearing his clothes in music videos, Gareth Pugh never quite made it as big as some were expecting. He was speculated to be a front-runner to take over McQueen when the designer died, until Sarah Burton took the reigns. However, the two coats he made for the Pet Shop Boys, one striped with black patent an the other with enormous gorilla-like fur sleeves, were some of the best outfits of the night. Bravo Gareth!

Highlight of the night? A showcase of Great Britain's supermodels. It was a little disconnected from the Olympic theme (both have heavenly bodies, I suppose?), but it was magnificent. Eight billboards on vehicles circled around the Union Jack stage, each one displaying a photograph of a different Brit model in languid repose, taken by the legendary British fashion photographer Nick Knight. There was Kate Moss, Naomi Campbell, Stella Tennant, Karen Elson, Georgia May Jagger, Lily Cole (her famous red locks now bleached blonde, where has she been hiding for the past four years?), Lily Donaldson, and Jourdan Dunn paired with David Gandy. The photos dropped away, revealing the models in all their lanky glory, vamping in sparkling gowns to the center of the stage. Georgia May, at only 5'7", was given a short dress to wear (possibly by Giles Deacon?). Despite having Mick Jagger and the lovely Jerry Hall as parents, her rise to fame really only came on riding the wave of gap-toothed blondies that followed in Lara Stone's footsteps. Nonetheless, all the girls (and guy) looked impossibly lithe and lovely and surely instilled bodily shame upon the muscled Olympic athletes. Oy.

I don't think I have anything to add to the chatter about the Spice Girls reunion, so I'll leave it at that. Now let's just wait and see what Brazil does to top this. Bringing Alessandra Ambrosio on-stage to twirl around awkwardly in a mullet dress wasn't a good start.
