Flashback - Jean-Paul Gaultier - Spring 2007 Couture

Hello! Just a quick flashback to the Spring 2007 Gaultier Paris show, courtesy of the Gaultier retrospective currently at the de Young Museum in Golden Gate Park.

The Virgins collection was inspired by Catholic imagery - think nun habits, communion dresses, stained glass, and Madonna and Child - and was one of Gaultier's more powerful shows. There were some exceptional, real daytime options for the client, fantastically ornate handwork on editorial-ready headwear, and a slate of options for your above-average celebrity (Dita Von Teese walked the show and Kylie Minogue had several looks tailored for her concert tour). One of my favorite looks was the dress worn by Querelle Jansen - a simple, powder blue fitted column with a swath of bold, blood red chiffon flowing languidly from a tongue-in-cheek sequined heart-and-sword motif (just ignore the fact that a few years later, Lindsay Lohan would manage to forever mangle the light-hearted wit of sequined hearts at Ungaro). The dress looked lovely in person, although the glowing blue backdrop made the dress fade in photos. I'll have more from the exhibit shortly.
